Ginger
– a wonder tuber
Ginger, whose botanical name is Zingiber officinale, is one of the world's best-known and most useful plants, used for centuries to flavour food and as a medicinal herb. It is a flowering plant whose rhizome, the ginger root, is widely used as a spice or medicine. Like turmeric and cardamom, the popular Ayurvedic root belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is native to the tropics and subtropics.
Spice and medicinal plant
The skin of ginger has a fluted surface with occasional calluses and rings and is light to dark brown, depending on the variety. The thickness of the peel depends on whether the rhizome was harvested young or ripe. The flesh is firm-fibrous and at the same time juicy and crunchy with a sharp, spicy and slightly sweet taste. The root is said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
