Sage
– The herb of the immortals
Sage (Salvia officinalis) belongs to the labiates family and originates from the Mediterranean region and North Africa. Currently, it is differentiated between 800 to 900 varieties and its history dates back thousands of years. Already in ancient times it was called the "herb of the immortals", as it was believed to have healing properties.
Multiple uses
With its pretty, elongated to almost egg-shaped leaves, which vary in color depending on the species and variety, sage is now increasingly used as an ornamental plant. The gray-green, felt-like, strongly fragrant leaves taste aromatically spicy and therefore enhance many dishes. The tasty violet-blue flowers are also an eye-catcher for both savory and sweet dishes and enjoy great popularity.
The Latin word "salvus" means healthy and thus also indicates its use as a medicinal plant, in monastery gardens the sage has long had a permanent place. Among other things, it is said to have anti-inflammatory effects on cold-related diseases of the upper respiratory tract and the throat. It is also said to have a positive effect on excessive sweating.
